Influence of essential onion oil on tin and chromium dissolution from tinplate
PubMed Result: "In this work the influence of essential onion oil (EOO) on metals dissolution (tin and chromium) from tinplate sheets before food canning was investigated. The analyses were performed by galvanostatic method and atomic absorption spectroscopy."
The values of tin obtained for the internal surface of tinplate covered with EOO (7.31-9.76 gm(-2)) are lower than the values when dioctyl sebacate oil (DOS), as a protective tinplate surface layer for food caning, was used (9.24-11.03 gm(-2)). Obviously, the presence of EOO diminished more efficiently then DOS oil the dissolution of tin in electrolyte during galvanostatic analyses. The efficiency of EOO as corrosion inhibitor was even more pronounced in the case of chromium where the dissolution from 1.8-2.5 mgm(-2) (DOS oil) was lowered to 1.0-1.3 mgm(-2) (EOO). Correlation of results obtained with two different physico-chemical methods was satisfying

Chromium-free passivating solution for chemical passivation of electroplated or heat-plated tin plate, contains sodium phosphate, cobalt sulfate, water, in preset weight ratio, and phosphoric acid as pH regulator, and has preset pH"
The invention relates to a Cr-free passivating solution for tinned plates, which contains (by weight parts) trisodium phosphate 20-70, cobalt sulphate 0.5-4, and water 1000. The passivating solution further contains phosphoric acid as pH regulator. The pH value of the passivating solution is 3-5. The invention has the advantages that: (1) the invention has no hazards to human body and environment; (2) the tinned plate passivated with the inventive passivating solution has resistances against corrosion, oxidation and sulfurization (blackening), approaches or reaches the level of tinned plate passivated with a chromate containing sexavalent chrome passivated; and the inventive passivating solution can be used for the chemical passivation and electrochemical cathode passivation of various electroplating tin plates or hot-plating tin plates.

Electrodeposited lanthanum film as chromate replacement for tinplate
Scopus: "The lanthanum film as chromate replacement was prepared on tinplate by the electrodeposition method."
In comparison to the Cr-passivated tinplate, the La-passivated tinplate exhibits better sulfide-stain resistance and similar corrosion resistance.

Structural characterization and properties of the TiO2 film on tinplate
Scopus: "A TiO2 film as chromate replacement was prepared on tinplate using sol-gel method, and appears golden. Sulfide-stain resistance of the TiO2-treated, chromate-treated and untreated tinplates was evaluated using a cysteine tarnish test."
The results show that the TiO2 film is more effective in improving sulfide-stain resistance and corrosion protection property of tinplate compared with the chromate-passivation film. Moreover, the cross hatch test reveals that the TiO2-treated tinplate provides excellent adhesion to the epoxyphenolic lacquer.
