WorldSteel releases lifecycle data

Factiva: "The World Steel Association has released its 2010 global steel lifecycle inventory, a database that provides information on the environmental profile of key products—including slab, hot- and cold-rolled coil, pickled hot-rolled coil, finished cold-rolled coil, hot-dip galvanized coil, electrogalvanized coil, tinplate, electrolytic-chromium-coated steel, organic coated steel, UO pipe, welded pipe, rebar, sections, plate and wire rod—it believes represent the spectrum of steel output.

The data is used to determine the environmental impact of steel-containing products, including their carbon footprints, and in studies guiding environmental standards development."

China: Tenova to supply 4 tinning lines in China

Factiva: "Yi Chang Three Gorges Quan Tong Colored and Galvanized Plate Co Ltd China has awarded to Tenova of Italy contracts for the supply of two high speed Electrolytic Tinning Lines equipped with insoluble anodes technology and two high speed Electrolytic Chromium Coating Lines."

All four lines shall process thin strip material for the packaging market. The process section will run as fast as 450 meters per minute with the entry and exit sections running at 600 meters per minute. The lines are designed for a strip 1250mm wide and 0.14mm to 0.55 mm thick. The target annual production is 250,000 tonnes.

Each line includes two uncoilers, laser welding machine, side trimmer, vertical entry accumulator, cleaning and pickling sections, tension leveler, plating section vertical exit accumulator, inspection and flying shear with two recoilers.

The Chromium Coating Lines shall employ a state of the art two steps plating technology. This two step plating process allows for a more precise and independent control of both the metallic chrome layer as well as the chrome oxide layer of the coating.

The insoluble anodes technology is the heart of the plating process of Tenova tinning lines, based on proprietary patent. The proven technology of this system allows achieving a very low tin loss in the sludge (less than 4%) and several other advantages ranging from cost savings to the environmental compatibility of the plant, from easier operating procedures to higher operational safety.

Specially Tenova designed edge-masks shall be employed for improving the tin-plate quality on the edges while allowing a fast and easy inspection and access to the cell.

The target of these lines is to produce tinplate for meeting the demands of the high-quality market. The plants are to be constructed in record time and first coils will leave the production lines already in mid 2011.

Thailand Price hike for steel sheets approved

The Commerce Ministry has given its approval for a price increase for steel sheets for canning industry to go up. The ministry expects the price hike will have only a slight impact on the cost of living for Thais.

Permanent Secretary for Commerce Yanyong Phuangrach revealed that the ministry has approved the price hike for tin-plated and chromium-plated steel sheets in line with the rising material costs.

Yanyong said the price hike is necessary as manufacturers could attempt to minimize costs by delaying the import of materials.

The delay would severely impact the food industry.

Danieli, the Italian steel mill manufacturer, is planning to participate in the construction of a 200,000 (two hundred thousand) tons/year tinplate mill in Tabriz."

Ball celebrates its contribution to the beer can

The Canmaker : "Yesterday’s 75th anniversary of the first canned beers being launched in the US has been celebrated by canmaking firm Ball Corporation.

A leading manufacturer of beer cans around the world, Ball has recognised the contribution that was made by pioneers in the 1930s in anticipation of the lifting of prohibition.

Of the 51 billion cans Ball makes each year worldwide, some 55 percent are for beer, with another 6 billion made by joint ventures.

Krueger’s beer was first to be launched in cans on 24 January 1935 in Richmond, Virginia, after years of development to find the right combination of metals and coatings. The cans weighed about five times what they do now and needed a church key to open. Similar canned beers were produced in Europe soon after, in South Wales for the Felin Foel Brewery."
