Steel Prices India: "Tex reported that China's domestic tinplate market is bound to decline in the wake of a tinplate price reduction by Baosteel Co Ltd for July shipments a situation that will test Japanese integrated steelmakers' brains in how to minimize the influence on what they negotiate for tinplate or TMBP exports to China.
Even as of June 15th no definite figure was known as to Baosteel's tinplate price reduction. But word afloat indicates that a price reduction amounts to CNY 450 per tonne for the most important customers with small cuts for other users and that thin sizes of tinplate are subject to a price reduction of CNY 450 per tonne with each base price unchanged.
It is understood that Baosteel's tinplate price reduction is intended to drive imitation tinplate out of the domestic market. Imitation tinplate is made from narrow HR sheet or CR sheets by directly plating them with tin. Also, Baosteel has priced up CR coils by CNY 400 per tonne for July shipments, a price increase that will handicap local steel mills producing imitation tinplate with CR sheets supplied from without."
