Factiva: "ippon Steel has decided to lift tinplate capacity at its Indonesian venture, PT Latinusa, to meet growing consumer demand for cans in that country. Current tinplate capacity at Latinusa is 130,000 tonnes/year but NSC plans to increase this to 160,000 t/y by early 2012, the company tells Steel Business Briefing.
The company estimates current demand for tinplate in Indonesia to be about 200,000 t/y. The Japanese steel producer expects this figure to grow, as can consumption by person is still quite low in Indonesia, meaning there is huge potential for growth as more Indonesians join the ranks of the middle-classes. Latinusa currently produces about 10,000 t/m of tinplate, more than 90% of its capacity, SBB calculates.
