The group’s packaging division, Corus Packaging Plus, announced plans to cut European tinplate capacity from 1.5 million tpy to 1.2 million tpy last April, by closing its small Bergen plant in Norway and cutting capacity at Trostre, in South Wales. CPP’s other major tinplate mill is at Ijmuiden, Netherlands.
However the company said yesterday that 290 threatened job losses had been put on hold, with at least 120 positions safe until 2010, as a result of an unexpected rise in demand. Company spokesman Robert Dangerfield told the South Wales Evening Post: “We have confirmed the delay in the potential announcement of losing roles. We are keeping everybody there until the end of 2010. The recession has a tinplate lining.”
Demand for canned food and beverages is generally thought to be recession-proof, while margins in tinplate production have been greatly improved as a result of a slump in the price of hot rolled steel coil since September."
