MEPs call for studies into environmental criteria for food and drink

packagingnews.co.uk: "The European Parliament has questioned the ability to establish 'reliable environmental criteria' for food and drink, which would be necessary to include it in the Eco Label scheme.

The European Commission argued in July that the expanded scheme should include processed food and fisheries, but the Parliament rejected the proposals last week.

MEPs urged the Commission to assess whether criteria could actually be established to make the labelling accurate and fair.

The Food and Drink Federation welcomed the Parliament's proposal of a feasibility study but said it would prefer to see food excluded from the regulation altogether."
