30% sales surge for Sainsbury’s tinned tomatoes

www.cantechonline.com: "Sainsbury’s 30p can of own brand ‘basics’ chopped tomatoes has become the UK supermarket chain’s best-selling line – proof, say experts, that the ‘ration book’ approach to housekeeping is making a return.

In the last month, Sainsbury’s has sold two million cans of the tomatoes – a 30% increase on last year. Tinned tomatoes – an invaluable store cupboard staple for families cooking on a budget – are a key ingredient in mince, chilli, pasta sauces and curries.“Household budgets are tighter than last year so people will be dining out less but demand for high quality food to cook at home is on the increase,” says Justin King, Sainsbury’s chief executive."
