Baosteel subsidiary adds 200,000 t/y tinplate capacity

Factiva: "Baosteel subsidiary Shanghai Meishan Co, located in eastern China's Jiangsu province, is about to commission a 200,000 tonnes/year tinning line, Steel Business Briefing learns from the company.

Meishan is currently hot testing the new tinplate line, which is matched with a shear line with a capacity of 80,000 t/y.

Meishan says the tinplate plant is part of its new RMB 1.6bn ($234m) downstream project now under trials that also includes a 200,000 t/y blackplate facility, a 200,000 t/y hot-dip galvanising line and 250,000 line making hot-dip aluminium-zinc coated products. Commercial operations will begin shortly.

Meanwhile, the China Packaging Federation (CPF) relocated its metal packaging R&D centre to Baosteel’s Shanghai works earlier this month as Baosteel is China’s largest tinplate maker, the CPF says. Baosteel currently produces about 1m t/y and accounts for 50% of the country’s tinplate capacity.

Meishan is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Baosteel Group with its headquarters in Shanghai and a production base in Nanjing city in Jiangsu province. The company has 3.5m t/y crude steel capacity following a series of works upgrades"
