Bulgaria's canning industry calls for EU support

The Canmaker: "Bulgaria’s canned food production is now less than 15 percent of what it was 15 years ago, mainly because of a lack of locally-grown produce.

That’s the view of Pavlina Paraskova, director of the Canning Research Institute based in Plovdiv, who is promoting a move for EU financial backing.

Last year the country’s canned food output fell by 30 percent as a result of the economic crisis, and is now 150,000 tons a year. In 1994 it was 1 million tons a year."
