Factiva: "ArcelorMittal South Africa is being investigated by the Competition Commission after the Department of Trade & Industry lodged a complaint against the company in regards to its 70% increase in tinplate prices, which was implemented in April.
The complaint was made on behalf of all canned goods producers in the region, after the matter was brought to its attention by the South African Fruit & Vegetable Canners’ Association (SAFVCA) prior to the increase being implemented.
A source at SAFVCA told Steel Business Briefing that the higher tinplate prices “make it virtually impossible (for can producers) to remain competitive” as it pushes the cost of producing a can 45-55% higher."
